A Good Day Today

Dear all,

Today was a good day. We went to see Isaac and he looked better (and extra, extra cute) to both Jong and I. He was sleeping quite peacefully during our entire visit and seemed very comfortable as we touched him. They did increase his feeding to 6 ml per feeding and the nurse said he was able to digest the milk. They also took the bandage out from his belly and we could see his belly button! Jong and I now sing to him quite a bit each time we are there and Jong tries to sing harmony sometimes. We think Isaac really likes it when we sing to him. Jong and I have to try harder to memorize lyrics for more songs though!! We sing a mix of children's bible songs, hymns and contemporary Christian songs to him. The nurse also said he opened his eyes. We don't know if we understood her correctly since her English wasn't very good. We saw him trying very hard to open his eyes but didn't open his eyes yet. We really pray that God will protect his eyesight and help him develop his eyes properly.

Our little boy has really grabbed our hearts - both Jong and I can't stop thinking about him and sometimes we start grinning or smiling thinking about him because he is oooooohhhhhh sooooooooo cute!

On another note, I went to see Dr. Sakamoto today to get my thyroid levels checked. It was really nice seeing him again. I really think he is a great doctor - very caring. I wished he was the doctor who did my C-section (Jong said my cut is crooked). Anyway, Dr. S checked me and said that the Toho U. doctors did a decent job. He did take out all the tape the Toho doctors put on my cut saying that the tape could trap a lot of bacteria. I personally thought it was weird that the Toho doctors want me to leave the same tape on for a whole month - it didn't seem very hygienic to me so I am glad Dr. S took it out.

On the emotional side of things, I still have quite a bit of ups and downs. Well, not really ups as I don't think I have felt that happy for quite a while so I guess its more like I have flats and downs. I guess part of it might be hormonal. I also still feel very exhausted emotionally. I haven't seen a lot of people yet but when I do, it takes a lot of effort to smile - and when I do smile, it is quite forced. I do smile when I see and think about Isaac (especially when he does something really cute) and of course, Jong can still get me to smile whenever he wants. Hmmm, now that I think about it more, I actually feel really blessed to have two boys who have stolen my heart and can make me smile whenever they want.

May our Lord bless each of you with many blessings and smiles,

Sonia

I'm so glad Isaac is doing well! With any luck he will *coast* through his NICU stay. Nathan didn't have any surgeries until coming home from the hospital and they were day surgeries.... one for hernia's ( he was 10 months old) and he had laser surgery on both of his eyes after being home for 3 months... and the ROP he had has completely 100% regressed since then!
I love seeing the pictures you post! Brings back so many memories! I will continue to pray for your little family!

Hi Sonia,

Great to see the photos of your cutie and that he is!! Will pray specifically as you asked. You had me laughing when you mentioned the "flats and lows" -- so glad to know that you are smiling!! What would we do without a smile, even if forced?! Having said that, exercise your boundaries; be yourself; be authentic. Hope you will regain yourenergy for some belly laughs, soon :)

By the way, Twila Paris has a wonderful CD, "Bedtime Prayers," lullabies and worship songs for little ones; they fed _my_ heart as I sang my little ones to sleep when they were babes. Also, have you heard of a children's singer, Raffi? He has some very cute songs (some nonsensical, some traditional -- all very fun and delightful).

Take good care, Andrea.

Hi Sonia! Please take it easy and take good care of yourself. It will be so important to Isaac that you are well rested and healthy. Bedrest and surgery can really take a toll on you body. When I was done with prolonged bedrest and c-section, my doctor told me that I can not do any work except babycare for 8 weeks. (including no driving and no housework) Anything your boss has is not nearly as important as your health.

Also, I'm sure your HR people have told you, but Japan has much more generous maternity laws than the U.S. I think you get 10 weeks off BEFORE you give birth and 14 weeks off for multiples. (I don't know what the required time off for the actual maternity leave is.) I also read that for one year after birth, companies have to give you flex time so that you don't have to commute during rush hour.

I'm so glad to hear that Isaac is doing well. What a fighter he is! I can't wait till the day he comes home to you and Jong.

Sonia - I bought a mini recorder and recorded me singing lullabies and praise songs to Ty. I asked the nurses to play it in his isolette when I wasn't there sometimes and they did. Ty LOVES music now. Just thought I'd pass the idea on.

There is some really great research out there on how music can help babies in the NICU, especially with pulse oxygenation levels. I don't remember many specifics from the articles, but if I find more I'll pass it along.

Keep singing! Harmonies or not, babies love their mommy's singing voices. (I know they love daddies too, but sorry guys - mommy's voice wins.)

He IS cute. I love his little arm positions.

Love,
Amy (HP)
